NEUROWELL – stroke & brain injury rehabilitation
A Programme Tailored For Your Recovery
We are a specialist, multidisciplinary, neurological rehabilitation service based at the University of Kent, Canterbury, supporting the charities Headway Kent and The Stroke Association.
According to the Stroke Association, the brain “has the ability to re-wire itself and adapt after injury, allowing you to improve skills such as walking, talking and using your affected limbs. This process is known as neuroplasticity. It begins in the weeks following an injury and can continue for years.“
Our intense programme of person-centred support is designed to enable optimum recovery after mild to moderate acquired brain injury, boosting both your physical and mental health and giving you the skills to manage your condition more effectively when back at home, with the option of our long term recovery programme.

why choose neurowell?
Specialist Rehabilitation When You Need It Most
Accessing the specialist therapy intervention for the recommended intensity in the community following an acquired brain injury is not often possible, and people are left waiting at a critical time in their recovery.
Neurowell provides a service from a purpose built centre based at the University of Kent campus, enabling an effective, collaborative approach to your rehabilitation.
Our aim is to provide access to the help you need at the right time to optimise recovery.

Person Centred Evidence-Based Rehabilitation
The NICE guidance recommends “at least 3 hours a day, on at least 5 days of the week, covering a range of multidisciplinary therapy including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy.”
We follow NICE guidelines for stroke rehabilitation, ensuring that you receive the right level of therapy to maximise recovery.
Each of our sessions is built around your personal goals, helping you make measurable progress in mobility, communication, and daily function.
Your recovery is closely tracked using gold standard outcome measures to monitor meaningful change over time.

“Rehabilitation can be very hard work, both physically and mentally, but many people find it helps them make vital progress with speaking, walking and other key skills”
The Stroke Association

A Holistic Approach to Recovery
Recovery isn’t just about therapy sessions—it’s about the whole person.
The Neurowell Centre adopts a holistic approach offering alternative complementary therapies to all members. As part of the programme all participants will be offered a complementary therapy/group each week e.g. reflexology and Thai Chi (dependent on availability).
As relaxation and sleep are essential to recovery, each participant will also be offered a sleep clinic assessment by our specialist team, including 3 consultations, review of a sleep diary and sleep hygiene advice.

Smart Technology for Smarter Recovery
We incorporate SMART technology to help patients track progress, monitor health, and stay engaged in their recovery beyond the programme.
At the Forefront of New Treatment Development:
Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation at Neurowell
Professor Wilkinson, founder of Neurowell, has pioneered the benefits of non-invasive brain stimulation in brain injury for over 20 years. His methods involve the gentle, painless application of electrical current to the scalp. Significant improvements have been seen in memory, face recognition, spatial perception, language, drawing, alertness and arousal.
His findings have been published in many scientific articles and have received national media coverage.
Patients who come to Neurowell will have the opportunity to sign up to one of Professor Wilkinson’s neuro-stimulation studies.
